Hitachi Cable Manchester (HCM) recently added to its engineering staff by bringing aboard Olindo Savi as its signal integrity engineer. Formerly of Siemon, Savi will represent HCM on technical advisory boards, industry trade associations and standards-making bodies as the lead engineer for transmission performance of existing and future HCM products. Savi will also be the primary liaison with customers relating to transmission performance and specification development.

RuggedCom has purchased WiNetworks Ltd., a player in the development of systems based on WiMAX 802.16e mobile broadband wireless technology. WiNetworks’ technology is used by large private networks and service providers to extend mobile broadband connectivity over metropolitan areas, says RuggedCom. Its WiMAX products will form the new RuggedMAX product line and augment Ruggedcom’s growing RuggedWireless portfolio.

As part an effort to promote environmental stewardship and create healthy work environments, Ideal Industries has launched its new Get Green With Blue strategic initiative. The company says it is aimed at educating electrical distributors, architects, electricians and datacom installers on how to properly use Ideal products to meet criteria for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

Industry Canada has launched its call-for-applications process for Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians. The program will consider applications to provide service to as many unserved and underserved Canadians as possible, allowing them to participate in the digital economy by giving them access to information, services and opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.

Over the last two or three years, WiMAX has gained a strong foothold in developing countries in which there is a need for broadband, but the fixed infrastructure is poor. However, we doubt that the developing market offers sufficient growth potential and size to sustain continued investment from such heavyweights as Cisco Systems, Intel and Motorola without additional sales in the developed markets. But in the developed markets of Europe and the USA, we see some early signs of a difficult future for WiMAX.
