Berk-Tek, a Nexans Company, has developed a hybrid cable that combines fiber strands and copper conductors under one jacket to provide data, video and power with one cable out to extended distances. One example where such a cable could be used, says Berk-Tek, is in IP camera applications: there’s an increased demand for structured cabling in the security market, but has been limited by UTP copper transmission distances. Though primarily designed for the security and building automation markets, Berk-Tek feels it is suitable for numerous other applications. When released, available options will include: gauge sizes ranging from #12 to #20; 1 to 7 conductors; singlemode, multimode 50/125 micron and 62.5/125 micron fibers; 1 to 24 fibers; loose tube or tight buffered design; and aluminum or steel interlocked armour. The product will be available Q1 2010.
